Barriletes y verbos: la importancia del contexto cultural en la enseñanza de las lenguas indígenas / Teaching Indigenous Languages through Cultural Context (and Kites)

Manuela Tahay is a Maya K'iche' educator from Nahualá, Guatemala with over a decade of experience teaching Maya K'iche' language and culture-currently at UT-Austin (academic year) and Tulane University's Maya Language Institute (summer), and previously at Vanderbilt University. In this interactive talk, Tahay will discuss the importance of cultural context in teaching Indigenous languages before leading participants in making their own barriletes, the multi-colored kites flown in Day of the Dead celebrations in Guatemala.
